  • 64 bit zoom

    Hi
    I read on http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/support/faq_64bit.html
that to allow the indexer to utilise more than 2Gb you need to go to 64 bit.

Does 64 bit indexing run faster in general?

We've already got the 64 bit installation file when we got the 32 bit one. So I figure we don't have to buy another copy, right?

Also, if the computer that the indexer is running on has 2 cpus, will this help zoom index faster?

One license of Zoom allows you to run both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the software. So no, you do not need to buy another copy to use the 64-bit version on the same machine.

Using more RAM (over 2GB) allows you to index more pages and more words. But it wouldn't change the speed of indexing noticably. The only reasons to switch to the 64-bit version is detailed on the page you linked to.

Regarding multiple CPUs -- if you switched from ONE single-core CPU without hyper-threading, to TWO single-core CPUs without hyper-threading, then yes, you will probably get faster performance.

But if you switched from ONE quad-core or duo-core CPU to TWO quad-core/duo-core CPUs, then no, it's very unlikely to be much difference.

And if you are indexing in Spider Mode rather than Offline Mode, then chances are that you're largely bounded by your bandwidth more than your CPU (that is, most of the time your CPU is waiting around for the file to download).
