  • Wildcards aren't working

Is there any way to inadvertently disable the use of wildcards? They don't seem to be working on a test search engine that I'm putting together. Here are some example searches:

    proofreading – 46 results
    pr??freading – 0 results
    pr*reading – 0 results

    editing – 43 results
    ed?ting – 0 results
    ed*ting – 0 results

I've tried using the 'any' and 'all' options. Any ideas?

There is a known issue with wildcards and stemming in V6.

Stemming means that a word like "proofreading" is stemmed to its base word "proofread" so that it can match against other derivative words like "proofreader" or "proofreads".

The wildcard operations are currently matching against the base word, so it fails in the examples above (where it expects the word to end in "reading"). However, a wildcard operation of "proof*" would likely match.

This has been fixed for the next version (V7) which is currently in alpha testing:

However, if you are using V6, and accurate wildcard matching is important to you, you can disable stemming for the above examples to work normally.

Thanks, Ray. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure that will do the trick.

      Great stuff.
