  • Tons of unneeded results

I work for a credit union. We're getting a ton of results that are really not narrowing down specific searches.

For example, if a user searches for the phrase "money order", but does not use the quotes, we get something like this.

"12 results found containing all search terms. 234 results found containing some search terms."

Plus the results found do not even mention "money order".

We can not expect our users to know to use quotes, so we need a solution.

    Please advise.

    Thanks,
    Cy

Is this a public site where we can see the results?

First you should check that the results are correct. Do the 12 pages returned as results contain all the search words. They should.

I assume from your post the real page that you want as the number #1 result doesn't appear at all in this group? If this is the case, then was the page even indexed? Where the page title and meta data set to meaningful keywords and phrases?

There are several solutions to play around with the rankings. See this FAQ to start with,

It would help if you could post a link to the site and the page you expected as the #1 result.

Oh, also, you can get rid of the 234 results found containing some search terms by selecting "All search words" as a requirement when the search is done.

You can make your search page default to use "match all search words" by checking the option under "Configure"->"Search Page"->"Default to 'match all search words'"

Then your end-users would not need to select this in advance.
