getting started - 404 error when clicking on link

I have followed the wizard in setting up the index for my site, the link to the search page works, the search page is searching a folder containing PDFs and I have the add-on for it.
when I run a search I get a results page that looks fine, but if I click on the link in the result I get a 404.
What have I missed?
