  • Trouble Indexing and displaying

    I have a site at http://www.slutsk.org

In that site there are 10 directories with files in them (maps, families, files, etc)

I want to spider all the files in the site. So i put in the start url http://www.slutsk.org. I had the out put to a directory on my harddrive. Verbose was set to on. I had the config file set to highlite the text and included the plug-in information.

    It indexed the site.

I uploaded the files to my root directory. I set the get form search.php to the root directory in my search.html page.

When a name is entered all I get is a page saying serach this site.

What am I setting incorrectly, or what should I do.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't understand the problem you are having.

I found the URL to your search function and did a search for a name and it seemed to work fine.

    For example,
    http://www.slutsk.org/search.php?zoo...y=FINKELSHTEIN
Produced 12 results over 2 pages.

Can you explain in more detail what exactly you think is incorrect.

If I index the site using the following as a spider http://www.slutsk.org/files it will produce an index that I can get to display when using the serach function.

If I spider with http://www.slutsk.org it goes through the site but will not display anything when using the search function. Though it does create some very large zoom files to u/l

If I do an off line search and upload the data, it will display the data (again not all) but it does not provide the proper html links.

I know that I am missing something in both types of indexing, but can not seemt to figure it out.

If I can be pointed to where in the .pdf documentation I should reread I would be most greatful.

When indexing with spider mode, your choice of the "start spider URL" can result in a different number of files found. This is because spider mode depends on the actual hypertext links on your webpages, to locate other files to index. If some parts of your site are not as well linked as another, then it is quite likely that using one start point will get very few files indexed.

Take a look at the following FAQs:

"Why are some of my pages being skipped in the indexer?":
        http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/support...s.html#skipped

"I am indexing my website with the spider mode but it is not finding all of the pages on my site":
        http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/support...spider_finding

In your case, it is quite likely that spidering from "http://www.slutsk.org/" will not locate all your files because that page relies on a Javascript menu to provide links to the other parts of the site. Spiders can not see these menus, and thus, it will not find the other pages to crawl. See the second URL provided above for solutions and more information.

Offline mode indexing can be used to index a copy of the website which is located on your computer. It should find all pages available - if not, again, refer to the above FAQ and turn on Verbose mode to see what is being skipped. You need to specify an appropriate Base URL for Offline Mode so that it will provide HTML links that suit the online version of the site.

One of the FAQ suggestions was to spider from a site map.

Do you recommend a particular program to do this?

          Thanks

A sitemap is just a page that simply lists links to the various parts of your site. You can often create this manually, depending on the size of your site. Most Javascript menu creation tools offer a sitemap feature (since it can be essentially the same thing, but just a flat listing of the links). We don't have any particular recommendations, but there are many out there. We've also considered this as an additional feature in Zoom.

Note that if you use any automatic sitemap creation tool, you will most likely come across the same issue with the sitemap tool needing to "find" all the pages of your site somehow. Most of them work by looking at a copy of your website on your hard disk. This is the same as "Offline mode" in Zoom, which would also avoid the problem with needing to locate links hidden in Javascript menus. However, "Spider mode" is required for sites which have dynamically-generated content (eg. PHP or ASP driven sites).
