Shorten long URL

Hi,

Is there a way to specify the max character a Url can take, because sometime the url is so long that its crash my design:

Ex : Url : http://mywebsite.com/myfilesdirectory/my_long_file_name.pdf become something like : Http//mywebsite.com/myfiles....name.pdf
