it seems that zoom sees an apostrophe (') different from a curly apostrophy (the normally curled apostrophy used in typing in a word processor or reading in a book). how can I get zoom to search something with a curly apostrophy?

The current version of Zoom (V4.2) does not index ’ (the HTML entity for "right single quotes" which is occasionally used as a curly apostrophe) as an apostrophe.
In the next version (V5.0), we have changed this so that the right single quote character will be treated the same as an apostrophe, so that you can search for them using the normal apostrophe (ie. ') character, provided you have apostrophes enabled for word joining.

If you're referring to your normal apostrophe character, as you have used above in "Brickman's", then this does not have any implications for you. You can indeed have a synonym entry for Brickman's=Brickmans
What ncg refers to is the use of a right single quote character (aka "curly apostrophe"), as follows: "Brickman’s". This is rare and not typically used outside of some word processors and print material. As mentioned above, the curly apostrophe will be treated as if it was a normal apostrophe in the next version, so the above synonym example will work for it too.
