Question re search template

Experiencing problems with some mobile (android) devices. So, can the document type in the search template be changed from xhtml to html5 without affecting search functionality?
Can the usual "meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0" be added to the search template with affecting etc.?

The output of the search results is pretty plain HTML.

We are using HTML5 in a mobile response way for our own search results page without issue.
