Synonyms list: can keywords be hyphenated?

In the syntax for the synonyms list:

word=synonym1,synonym2,synonym3, ...

can "word" be a hyphenated compound, given that the hyphen has been specified in the "Indexing options" configuration page as a "join word"?
Example:
user-defined=user,defined,instance
