It appears that our search page doesn't work while the indexing process is occurring. I thought I had tested it before and found that it did work. Is it possible to search while indexing?
Yes it is possible to do searches while the indexing process takes place.
The outage is limited to a 1 or 2 second change over period right at the end of indexing.
Maybe you have load problems on your server?
