Featured Image Support in Wordpress

I would like the featured images to show and be styled in my wordpress installation results. How can I accomplish this? What about other images, like avatars if I spider a members directory?

Typically web pages have dozens of images. Some small some large. So it is hard to decide, in an automated fashion, which images is the important one on any particular page.

For most web sites using this meta data tag is the best solution.
