Limit sitemap.xml

Is there any way to limit and/or break up the sitemap.xml file into more than one file and have those sitemaps registered in sitempaindex.xml.

According to SEO best practices, goodle doesn't really like more than 100 pages listed in a sitemap file: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-many-links-is-too-many

Are there plans to accomplish this?

You are confused about the max of 100 links in a sitemap. This is just not true.

We already split up the sitemap file as required and create a sitemap index file.

Google adheres to Sitemap Protocol 0.9 as defined by sitemaps.org.
