Dropping the domain extension isn't really stemming.
I would have expected that any domain would mention its own name in the text.

For example dogs.com would surely mention something about dogs in the text on the site, one would hope?

If this is for your own domains then it is trivial to fix.

        If your domain was,
        www.WishIHadDog.com

        Add these meta keywords,
<meta name="KEYWORDS" content="dog, canine, muzzle, bitch, canidae, German Shepherd, Labrador, Cocker Spaniel">

How then do you rank for high keywords?

we have several travel like sites. http://www.dealvegas.com for example, With deal and vegas being soooo high in the key world list. What to do? More creative with text or PR?

            I don't understand the problem.
Are you saying you have a site called dealvegas.com that doesn't mention the word deal or vegas on the content of the page?
