difference between * and ? wildcards.

Is there documentation on the difference between the two wildcard characters? When I use them in some searches, they return different results. The * seems to return better results, whereas the ? might not return anything using the same search parameter.

? will match any one character.
* will match any number of characters

So sit? will match "site"
And sit* will match "sitemap", "situation" and "site"
