If you are referring to the:
Configuration > Scan Options > Use Meta Information from Plugins...

I thought I could not use this option when the PDFs are from another website? Am I mistaken (again)?

Don't I need a password for PDFs? (which I wouldn't have access to for outside sites).

Also, I got the CGI up and running. It's amazingly fast and a credit to your software (especially since I know nothing about CGI).

Yes. You can use it on any PDF on any site.

You only need a password if the PDF in encrypted to prevent people reading them or to prevent text extraction. Not many PDF's on the public part of web are encrypted.

Yes, the compiled CGI binary executable is very fast compared to interpreted scripts.

So, if I enable "Use meta information from plugins..."

Where will this "meta information" appear in search results layout?

e.g. will it appear in the:
        Title of page?
        Meta description?
        Context description?

I just need to know which elements should appear in the search results for the meta information to show up in them.

Should I just enable all three fields?

          As well as that..

In the "Indexing Options", would I need to enable Meta descriptions, keywords, authors for the "Use meta information from plugins.." option to be effective?

Or is this a totally separate issue that is not relevant here?

Yes. Meta data can effect all three and yes you should enable indexing of meta descriptions & keywords, if the documents you are indexing have this information populated.
