  • Zoom can not index one of my domains

    Hello,
I have one domain that Zoom will simply not index. I've had this domain for 3 months and I"ve had it on two separate hosting services and I've never been able to index the site. Zoom indexes like a charm on every other site I'm running, just not on this one.

I've rebuilt the site a few times.. nothing. The site index tool simply runs throught a green bar or two, then I get the red bar that says cannot download www.--------.com/filename (file not found).

I've run the domain through dnsreport.com there were two failed tests, one having to do with the postmaster. However I don't know how to read these reports.

Any suggestions as to why I can't index this one site?

Can you turn on verbose mode and send us your log file (or post it).

I assume www.--------.com is not the real domain name?

You might also want to read these FAQ questions about why the indexer might skip pages and not index parts of your site,
    http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/support...s.html#skipped
    http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/support...avascriptmenus
    http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/support...spider_finding

If you have a file not found error, then maybe you have a broken link on your site?

      Thanks David,

I've emailed to you the log in verbose mode with my name in the headline so you should see it when it arrives. And yes, the URL has a different name than that which I posted in the forum, that is all in the email.

The three links you provided are informative however if those first two issues were the problem then I'd have the saem problem with every other site I've indexed and my problem is only wiht this one domain. The third issue has potential but I'm not sure if there's something inherently wrong with my domain or not, I"m hoping the log I provided to you will help.

Thanks again for the help David.

      Eric.

David, I've just resent my email to 'davidw@wrensoft.com' the title is Eric Semiinara, copy of my Zoom Log and the Text File Zoom Log is attached, it is a 24 KB file, very small. I put a return receipt on it to make sure I'm notified when you receive it.

        Eric.

          David,
My email was just bounced back, the message is as follows: This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<davidw [at] wrensoft.com>:
          host mailwash4.pair.com [66.39.2.4]: 450 <davidw [at] wrensoft.com>:
Recipient address rejected: Service temporarily unavailable:
          retry timeout exceeded

I would prefer not to post the information publicaly, It's a small file, I will PM it to you.

          Eric.

I am not sure what happened to the E-Mail. I had other E-Mail during the same period. It might be interesting to send it again to see if the server really did have a temporary problem or if it was something else. We do run Anti-spam software on the server that rejects E-Mail from black listed domains. In particular we use DNSBLs (Domain Name System Blackhole Lists). So maybe that was the problem.

            Anyway to your Zoom problem,

The problem is the one described in the FAQ.

            -----From the FAQ-------
Parts of your website are hosted under a different domain or sub-domain: Zoom determines whether the links it finds are part of your website, or a link to someone elses' website by its base URL. You can add multiple base URLs to Zoom in order to allow other domains to be indexed as part of your site - see the FAQ on indexing multiple domains or sub-domains for more information.
            ----------------------------

You can see this in your log file. You have 2 subdomains.

            08:36:21 - [SCANNED] Scanning http://www.yoursite.com/
08:36:21 - [SKIPPED] Skipping http://yoursite.com/ (External site - does not match base URL)
08:36:21 - [SKIPPED] Skipping http://yoursite.com/yoursite/subdir/ (External site - does not match base URL)

            --------------------------

To fix this you need to fix the base URL by adding two base URLs to this start point. One base URL per sub-domain.

            ---------From the Zoom help file------

Advanced spider URL options: Clicking on the “More >>” button will bring up a window which allows you to add more spider URLs or specify advanced spider crawling options. This is particularly helpful when indexing across multiple websites or domains. With each spider URL you can specify the following options:

            Base URL
This is the URL where your website will be published and uploaded. For example, if your website will be published at http://www.myisp.com/~bob/index.html, then http://www.myisp.com/~bob/ will be the base URL of your website. This is used to determine the base location of each file on your website, so do not specify the filename of the main page (ie: index.html, home.htm, etc.).

In spider mode, this is automatically determined for you based on the URL of the start page specified. However, you can override it from the Advanced spider options window (by clicking on “More>>”, and selecting the URL and clicking “Edit”).

You can also specify multiple base URLs in spider mode, to allow the spider to follow links which span across multiple domains and websites. You can do this by separating them with semi-colon characters “;”.For example, to index the site “http://www.mysite.com/” so that it will follow links to the sub-domains, “http://news.mysite.com/” and “http://lib.mysite.com/,” you would specify the following base URL: http://www.mysite.com/;http://news.m...ib.mysite.com/
            ----------------

            Hope this helps
            David

              Hi David,
Thanks for helping me out with this, I never would have figured this out on my own.

As for my email, I've just resent it a third time. If it doesn't come through then I must be getting blocked by your antispam however my email address is not blacklisted..... I think..... I'll have to check. This is the same email address with which I corresponded with you when I firsdt purchased your software.....

I just now received another bouncebakc message, same one:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:
              ...
              retry timeout exceeded

Oh well, chalk it up on the list of "little mysteries to solve one day". Thanks again for your help David,

              Cheers,

              Eric Seminara

[ADMIN UPDATE:] E-mail issues are due to Greylisting and misconfiguration on the sending server.
