  • IE 5.2 for MAC - odd black squares

    First off, thank you for this wonderful software.

    I've got everything working fine but get an odd character displayed in the search results when viewing through IE 5.2 for MAC.

    The problem seems to be with apostrophes. Safari displays them fine however IE 5.2 for MAC displays them as black squares. The page is encoded using UTF-8.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Can you post the URL for your site and tell us a search term that illustrates the problem.

    Or can you post up here a small amount of HTML that Mac IE5.2 renders incorrectly.

      Thanks for looking. Try this:

      http://wyliecomm.com/zoom_index/sear...ery=power+pack

      Again, this only seems to be an issue with IE 5.2 for MAC. Windows browsers and Safari do not have this problem.

        The Zoom search result page seems to have UTF-8 character encoding. If you look in the HTML you'll find this,
        <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

        But the pages you are indexing, for example this page,
        http://www.wyliecomm.com/learning_to...wer_pack.shtml
        are using a default ISO8859-1 (English, Single byte).

        UTF-8 is multbyte, ISO8859-1 is single byte.

        I think you must have selected UTF-8 encoding in Zoom when in fact your pages aren't really UTF-8 at all?

        For most characters it doesn't matter. But for unusual characters like the right curly quote, it does matter.

        So try fixing the encoding in Zoom and re-indexing. (You might also need to manually fix the encoding in your search_template.html file now).
