Category names in search result

Is there a way to avoid the

<span class="category">[Category name]</span>

added on every result item when a search is filtered by categories? Sure, I can use a style to set invisible, but is there an option to not generate it?

No. It is always generated if you are using categories.

As you say, you can hide it using CSS.
