I am going into the search.js file and changing it to soft by date for the default. The only problem is that everytime it reindexes is it goes back to sort by relevance? Please let me know how I can get this to stay at the sort by date. Thanks in advance.

There is simple way of doing this at the moment.
You need to pass the parameter,
&zoom_sort=1
to the script as part of the URL to turn on date sorting.
To do this, you will probably need to turn off the automatic generation of the search form and create you own search form that sets this value. If I think of a better way, I'll let you know.
