Changing Category checkboxes to drop down list

Hi,
I was wondering if there is a guide to changing the check boxes for Categories to a drop down list, like the ones shown on many of the example sites?

I don't want to mess up the search.php page by editing it. The current checkboxes don't validate as transitional XHTML on my site and it may be neater.

An option to switch between displaying Categories as check boxes or a drop down list in the Zoom Config would be ideal!

In Zoom, if you select the option "allow searching in multiple categories", then you get a bunch of check boxes. If you don't select this option, then you get the drop down list.

Any other behaviour would require some custom modifications to the code.
