"Submit" modifications?

I am trying to change the properties of how the search button looks.
I am trying to use an image that functions like a submit button. At first I tried just changing the button's class to have the search image in the background but I cant get rid of the text ...value= "submit" without the button basically disappearing. I tried inspecting the zoom sites button to get a look like that but I can't figure it out from the html, how do they do that!?
