  • context display with Javascript version

I used an old version of the app and it WAS able to display context in the search results when i was using the Javascript version. I really don't have time to learn to manipulate PHP in my templates. I just want to "update" my index. I wish i still had the old version of zoom, i'd just use that. Is it available...could anyone send me a copy?

    Thanks.

The Javascript version never did context results. The language itself has too many limitations to implement the more memory intensive search functions, like context results. You need to use the ASP, PHP or CGI option to get context results.

You can download the old V3.1 version from the top of this page,
    http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/oldversionhistory.html
but it will still not do context results with the Javascript option.

Using the PHP option doesn't really require any PHP knowledge.

      Javascript "context" display

Thanks for the info, it was my mistake. The information i had interpreted as "context" information was in fact the "meta" information. However, it was still much easier going for me after i located version 3.1 again. The specific way the javascript indexed the site had changed, and using this version i was able to simply replace the index file with a newer version. I have embedded the search code into quite complex HTML and it seemed a chore to redo it. It didn't seem like a five minute job to "upgrade" to the php version, or am i mistaken. Thanks again for an excellent product.

For most sites the upgrade process would be 10 - 15minutes. But if you have done your own custom work then we can't really comment.

There are some hints for upgrading from V3 to V4 here,
        http://www.wrensoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5

However the Javascript option has poor performance compared to ASP. PHP and especially CGI. See,
        http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/benchmarks.html

So it is really only an option for small sites and search functions on CD's.

So you may find you need to move to PHP eventually in any case.

I recently upgraded my 5000 page CD from the javascript search to PHP search.

Regardless of the time taken to complete the upgrade, the benefit to users was a massive drop in search times - down from 50 seconds to sub-1 second.

It also meant being on the inside loop on further recent Zoom Search changes such as the "jump to and highlight" just added.

From my perspective the switch to PHP has been well worth the effort.
